In a rather busy place of Kolkata,is a pretty big 'at the verge of shutting down' shop,with a legacy of several decades long and housing a pretty interesting story.
"The Banerjee Brothers" is a shop of such status that there is not a living mortal within 5 km of radius who doesn't know its name.It may not sound as popular as 'Apple', but doesn't have to be; It's a household selling shop after all. It dates back to the childhood of my father. When I came back from hostel and found it was about to shut down, I really became curious to know-why?
Soon I came to know about a pretty interesting story: Each and every heir to the legacy who ever mounted the ancestral 'Governing Chair' died unexpected death. From father to son to grandson to his wife and even maid, whoever ran the shop even for a day-died unexpectedly. Now no one was left to run the shop-the entire family tree being buried.
I had to investigate;
I went out to see for myself
. I was greeted with closed shutter. After few minutes of silence, I was about to leave when a voice from behind surprised me.
"what you want?, asked an old man.
"Oh ! I thought it was closed, Umm... I need a 'fivestar' please", I was happy it was still selling.
"It's just closed for repairing", saying this the old man went in.
He returned with a 'fivestar' and paying him 10 rupees I left.
When I said this to my father, he was utterly surprised-laughing at my 'seeming' joke.
"there was only one old man ever to run that shop,the founder! nobody else in their family lived long", said my father. Laughing, he left the room bringing the discussion to an end.
To this day,I stand infront of the shop,stare the old man framed in picture,hanging on the wall and ask,-"Had you being ghost,why you took my payment ?"
The shop is about to get closed by November,2014
